The West Coast Athletic Club (WCAC) has been hosting their annual Pub Run for nearly 20 years, raising funds for local charities for 13 of those years. In total we have donated a total of nearly R400 000 to 9 charities. The largest beneficiaries to date are those we have supported for the last 3 years: the Emmanuel Day Care Centre in Atlantis (R199 000) and Wiele500 (R50 000). This year we have selected 2 local charities: Seal College and Tableview Angels:
Wiele500 was established as a trust in 2012 with the aim to help people with a need for wheel-legs – to improve their quality of life and enable them to contribute to society in a positive manner.
The trust is managed by a group of passionate individuals wanting to make a difference.
Wheels 500 gives away wheel-legs to people who would normally not qualify in terms of the Department of Social Development’s legislation, but hunger for their own independence.
The Emmanuel DayCare Centre was founded in November 2000 to meet the need in Atlantis for children with disabilities of both an intellectual and physical nature. Currently (2016) Emmanuel Day Care Centre caters for 71 children and adolescents from Atlantis and surrounding farms and informal settlements. Many of the children are from low income families, most unemployed and single parents. In many cases these children would be left at home, some unattended and with no oversight or stimulus. The children range from 12 months to 18 years.
Seal College is a school and workshop for intellectually challenged children and young adults in Milnerton . They are a registered NPO and an independent school registered at the Dept. of Education.
Their running costs are covered by school fees, but for anything else like maintenance they raise funds – for the last 4 years for a double garage and they hope to start building soon. Their program also includes free aftercare and holiday care.
Table View Angels
The TVA vision and mission is to help families in need to bridge the gap between destitution and being self-efficient by giving families a HAND-UP, not just a simple HAND-OUT.
Table View Angels (TVA) is a community focused group covering the greater areas between Millerton and Melkbosstrand, Cape Town, Western Cape. Established in September 2014, TVA operates as a registered CPF organization as well as a registered NPO with valid NPC, PBO and SARS registration.
TVA identified the growing need to act as a support element to families in the community who have fallen on hardship and find themselves going through a “bad spell”. All our projects are dealt with in an extremely confidential and discreet manner. On average we feed and assist 20-30 families per week.
TVA consists of a group of volunteers who aim to help the broader community by making a dignified difference to the lives of people who need a temporary hand-up. We investigate the requests made to us thoroughly, after which a compulsory home visit is conducted and only after our stringent criteria are met do we offer assistance for a period of 2-3 months.
